Indeed, on their Golden wedding anniversary, The Queen spoke of her husband fondly, saying; ''I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know.”

The Duke performed countless engagements across Britain and the Commonwealth by the side of his wife, Queen Elizabeth II. In addition to this, he completed 22,219 solo engagements too, before he retired from public in 2017. He was a passionate and well regarded Naval officer in his youth, leaving the armed services when Elizabeth ascended to the throne, in 1952.

The Duke, passionate about the environment and survival of the species, became president of the World Wildlife Fund between 1981 and 1996. However, his biggest legacy must be The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The award programme expanded to 144 nations, since its founding in 1956. More than six million young adults have achieved the awards that involve community service, physical fitness and leadership development.
