World War One Commemoration - Jigsaw Puzzle (1000 pieces)
World War One Commemoration (We will remember then) - Jigsaw Puzzle (1000 pieces)
At last, the guns fell silent at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 1918. The Great War had ended after four years of fighting - millions had died, many more had been wounded. Newspapers proclaimed 'The War Is Over'. Soon the celebration postcards and souvenir mugs went on sale, along with 'Victory' streamers of paper flags, electrical illuminations, gramophone records, commemorative tea tins and 'Peace Day Souvenir' tin plates ready to hang on the wall. Now, with the war finally over by Christmas, families could rejoice with 'Peace' crackers.
In June 1919, the Treaty of Versailles outlined the conditions for peace. On 11th November 1920, the Cenotaph (designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens) was unveiled to the memory of 'Our Glorious Dead'. On the same day, at Westminster Abbey, the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior was consecrated. The annual Poppy Appeal began in 1921.
